Goa, the small state located on the western slopes of the Western Ghats, touching the Arabian Sea. Easily accessible, it is world famous for its beaches. It also has picturesque landscapes, monuments, pleasant climate, cuisine for all tastes and above all hospitable people. Goa was under the control of Potuguese for over four centuries, until it was liberated and merged into the Indian Union in 1961. Goan architecture is a class apart. It combines Portuguese, Indian and Mughal styles. Travel to the state increases. About 10 lakh people go there for a year. And tourism jobs for 20 percent of the population in the state.
The larger cities in the country are: Panaji, the capital of the state and the headquarters of the North Goa district, on the banks of the river Mandovi, Margao (33 km), the headquarters of South Goa district and commercial center; Vasco da Gama (30 km ); Mormugao harbor, 5 km from Vasco da Gama, Mapusa (13 km).
The famous beaches are Calangute (16 km), Colva, close to Margao, Dona Paula (7 miles), scootering for water; Miramar, near Panaji, Anjuna (18 km); Vagator (22 km).
Other Sites: - Old Goa: Founded by Adil Shah in the 16th Century and conquered Alfonso de Albuquerque, Basilica of Bom Jesus: Most church, a World Heritage monument, and where St. Francis Xavier is buried, Se Cathedral: The famous Golden bell is here, Brahma Temple (7 km), on the 5th Century built; Sri Chandranath Temple (45 km), where the deity of the Bhoja kings installed gets during a full moon moonlit; Sri Saptakoteswar Temple (37 km), Safa Masjid at Ponda; Aguada Fort (18 km), built by the Portuguese; Dudhsagar Waterfalls (60 km); Mayem Lake (35 miles); Bondla Forest Sanctuary (50 miles); Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary (60 km), Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, near Panaji.
DIRECTIONS: Conveniently located by air, sea, rail and road transport, Goa is well connected. There is a catamaran service from Mumbai, the only 7 hours long instead of 14 hours on the road. There are flights to Dabolim airport from Mumbai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore and Delhi. Transport is an autorickshaw, motorcycle taxi, cruise, bus and taxi.
